[Perth, WA] – Centurion, one of Australia’s largest privately-owned and operated logistics providers, is proud to announce the commencement of construction on its off-grid battery electric truck infrastructure project.

Centurion is installing charging equipment, integrated energy generation and storage infrastructure in the form of solar array and battery, at their Hazelmere depot in east Perth.

This transformative development, in partnership with Cape Dunstans, a leading provider of material processing, logistics, and infrastructure solutions, marks an important milestone in Australia’s transition towards sustainable logistics and transportation.

The new infrastructure will support Centurion’s fleet of 30 battery electric rigid and prime mover trucks, powered by off-grid energy, as part of a broader vision to reduce its emissions. The fleet will operate with off-grid emissions free energy, cementing Centurion’s leadership in the adoption of clean energy solutions.

The economic stability of this project has been made possible through funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), and their investment to accelerate Australia’s transition to renewable energy and sustainable heavy transport.

The infrastructure will be built across 2 locations at the depot, with the North site scheduled for completion in December 2024 with electric trucks operating from January 2025. The entire project will reach full operation by mid-2025.

Once completed, Centurion’s electric fleet will represent a step forward in sustainable transport, reducing carbon emissions while ensuring long-term operational efficiency.

Centurion Chief Executive Officer Justin Cardaci said that the company is actively developing and implementing a decarbonisation strategies aimed at aligning its operations with the broader energy transition.

“We are excited to break ground on this landmark project, which showcases our commitment to sustainability and innovation within the transport sector. This project is a key step towards the future, and it wouldn’t be possible without the expertise and collaboration of Cape Dunstans. Together, we’re leading the way in delivering freight solutions operating from clean green energy.”

Greg Hutchinson, Cape Dunstans Chief Executive Officer, said that their involvement in this project underlines their commitment to delivering forward-thinking infrastructure solutions for the resources, utilities, and infrastructure sector.

Supporting the project through infrastructure works including the provision of 4.4-megawatt rooftop solar arrays, 10.32 megawatt hour battery capacity and 15 dual port slow and fast chargers.

“Seeing this project through from concept to completion is a testament to Cape Dunstans expertise, and we are proud to play a key role in supporting Centurion as they embark on a game-changing transition to off-grid, battery-electric logistics.”

This project, with its reliance on off-grid renewable energy, highlights how industry partnerships and innovative thinking can drive meaningful change in Australia’s logistics sector.

Centurion pioneers Australia’s first 100% Renewable Energy, off grid, Battery Electric Truck fleet.

National full-service logistics solutions provider Centurion will amass and operate Australia’s first 100 per cent Renewable Energy off grid Battery Electric Truck fleet in a program, backed by the Government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) Future Fuels Program.

The $29 million project plans to integrate 30 Battery Electric Trucks into Centurion’s existing fleet, powered by solar generation and off-grid battery energy storage by the end of 2024.

Supported by ARENA’s investment of $15.8 million, Centurion is installing charging equipment, integrated energy generation and storage infrastructure, at its Hazelmere depot in Perth.

Once ready, the 30 Mercedes-Benz eActros Electric Trucks will service the wider Perth metropolitan area, supported by four megawatts of rooftop solar, 10 megawatt hours of battery, and 15 dual port slow and fast chargers.

Centurion CEO Justin Cardaci said: “This project represents a significant step in Centurion’s decarbonisation journey and continues our work towards an operational future with net zero emissions. Centurion actively seeks to deploy technology where it’s ready to displace the diesel transport equivalent and the ARENA funding certainly helps support the project’s economics.”

Centurion is a national operator serving the resource hubs and remote communities of Australia.

“For most of our operations, the zero emissions heavy transport technology won’t be ready for several years. However, battery electric trucks are now ready for operations across the wider metropolitan area and it’s great that Centurion has the capacity to bring this technology into our fleet,” Mr Cardaci said.

“Operating a real zero emissions truck fleet from off grid solar and battery is a significant step in supporting the energy transition.”

“With more than 2400 employees across Australia, customers from a wide range of sectors, and the multiple communities that rely on our service, it’s important we demonstrate a genuine commitment to sustainable operations and drive decarbonisation projects like this one.”

Centurion and ARENA, in collaboration with Daimler Truck, Geniux Cleantech Group, and Switch Batteries, will deliver quantifiable emissions reductions, and generate meaningful environmental benefits for Centurion and the broader community.
