This week, Centurion commissioned milestone two of Australia’s first fully off-grid, 100% renewable energy, battery electric truck project, marking a major milestone in sustainable freight transport.

Centurion’s Perth Airport depot operates two charging sites, named North and South. The North charging site was commissioned back in February and the South charging site is now live from this week, adding a further 10 Mercedes-Benz eActros 300 Battery Electric Trucks to service the Perth metropolitan area. This brings the Hazelmere fleet to 30 electric trucks, all fuelled by onsite green energy supply. South site energy infrastructure includes 2.2MW of rooftop solar, 3.44MWh of battery storage, 75kW and 150kW chargers, and a back-up generator operating on HVO. The project has been developed in partnership with ARENA under the Driving the Nation Program.

Total project specifications include:

• 30 eActros 300 battery electric trucks – 25 rigid trucks and 5 prime movers

• 4.4MW of rooftop solar

• 10.3MWh of battery storage

• 15 dual-port slow and fast chargers

• Fully off-grid charging infrastructure

• Backup generation using HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil)

“The project is now fully operational, and it marks a significant milestone in progressing our decarbonisation journey,” said Justin Cardaci, CEO of Centurion. “Completing this important infrastructure milestone and having the full electric truck fleet operational is a great outcome for Centurion. It shows that with the right partnerships and investment, sustainable freight solutions are achievable today. We’re not only reducing emissions but also providing electric trucks fuelled by green energy that can deliver a high-quality reliable service for our customers.”

The $36 million project was delivered in partnership with Daimler Truck, Cape Dunstans, Switch Batteries and bp Australia, and made possible through $15.8 million in funding from ARENA. This project demonstrates how industry collaboration, renewable energy, and innovation can drive meaningful change in Australia’s transport and logistics sector, reducing emissions while maintaining operational performance.

The next step for the project is to optimise the integration of the green energy and electric truck fleet into Centurion’s wider operations at the Perth Airport depot. This project will generate significant learnings, and Centurion in conjunction with ARENA will be seeking to share this knowledge across the industry.

Centurion Transport, a leading name in the Australian transport and logistics sector, is proud to announce the launch of its groundbreaking Driver Development Program. This initiative aims to tackle the shortage of skilled drivers in the industry and enhance the safety of road transport operations.

The CEO of Centurion Transport, Justin Cardaci, highlighted the dual objectives of the program: “The Driver Development Program we are launching exists for two reasons: to address the shortage of skilled drivers across the transport and logistics sector and to help build the skills of those in the industry to ensure they are operating trucks and road trains safely.”

This program also seeks to maintain high standards within Centurion’s own team and provide opportunities for existing employees who aspire to transition into driving roles.

The company’s vision extends beyond its own needs, as Justin Cardaci explained, “We want to deliver best-in-class training for the road freight operators outside these gates, through industry-relevant, on-the-job training and development.”

Centurion extends its appreciation to its esteemed partners. Nationwide Training is set to deliver the accredited Certificate III in driving operations, while Eureka 4WD Training will play a crucial role in the licensing component as part of our driver development program.

Centurion Transport has collaborated with Driver Risk Management for their Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations Skill Set and Workforce Australia for sourcing new employee candidates.

Recent data from online job platform Seek, indicates around 20,000 unfilled truck driving positions across Australia, highlighting a substantial demand for proficient, well-trained, and highly skilled drivers within the road freight sector.

Justin Cardaci emphasized the company’s commitment to safety and excellence: “As a business that’s here for the long-haul, we take seriously our role in ensuring every driver behind the wheel of a Centurion truck can leave this depot – or any of our other facilities around the country – knowing that they have received the best possible training and on-the-job experience we can offer them.”

“It is important to me personally that each of our drivers completes their journey and returns to their families safely.”

Centurion Transport’s dedication to safety and its investment in both state-of-the-art vehicles and driver training reflect the company’s commitment to serving its customers and the broader Australian community.

Minister Assisting the Minister for Transport, Hon David Michael MLA, shares the Centurion vision for a safer and more responsible road culture.

“Driving any kind of heavy vehicle carries with it an enormous responsibility in terms of safety, and good training is integral to keeping our roads safe, keeping road users safe and keeping the industry safe.

“Centurion Transport is to be saluted for developing its own approach to addressing the shortage of skilled drivers across the transport and logistics sector, and I’m pleased to see that the Centurion Driver Development Program has safety at its centre.”

As Centurion enters the month dedicated to safety awareness, the Company proudly aligns itself with the nation in embracing National Safe Work Month. Their commitment to ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for workers is unwavering. This year’s theme, “For everyone’s safety, work safely,” resonates with the company’s values as they work together to build a positive culture of safety, responsibility and well-being.

Centurion has always strived for excellence in safety standards. Janet Walsh, Senior Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) Advisor, emphasises this commitment: “Safety is the foundation upon which Centurion operates. Our continuous journey of improving our safety culture is a collaborative effort that must be a 24/7 mindset.”

Throughout this National Safe Work Month, Centurion will be focusing on fundamental safety topics each week, demonstrating the Company’s commitment to safety across their nationwide network.

In the first week of National Safe Work Month, the Company spotlights the significance of teamwork in managing workplace risks. Identifying and reporting hazards is a collective responsibility. Centurion urges all team members to actively engage in hazard identification and reporting. This proactive approach not only ensures the safety of colleagues but also contributes to a safer working environment for all.

Week two is dedicated to protecting the mental health of our workers. Centurion recognises that being safe and healthy goes beyond physical well-being. Mental health is just as important. Resources and support are provided to help team members understand and manage psychosocial hazards within their workplace. A healthy mind leads to a safer workplace.

In the third week, the Company’s focus is on promoting a positive safety culture; drawing attention to hazards present for new and young workers, culturally or linguistically diverse workers, isolated and remote workers, and workers returning to work from injury. At Centurion, they believe in supporting and educating all workers. A positive safety culture is built on trust, respect, and open communication. Every worker is encouraged to actively participate in creating a culture prioritises safety.

Approaching the final week of National Safe Work Month, Centurion underscores the importance of preventing accidents and incidents. Safety is not just a goal; it’s a commitment.

A robust safety culture not only enhances safety but also yields positive benefits in terms of productivity and worker confidence. As Janet Walsh states, “Improved morale, safety, and productivity are intertwined. When our teams feel safe and confident, they deliver their best, ultimately benefiting our valued customers.” National Safe Work Month serves as a collective reminder of the shared responsibility to maintain safe workplaces. It’s a time for everyone to unite and ensure that safety remains a fundamental priority in all activities. By working together and fostering a culture of safety, they aim to realise a workplace where everyone can thrive.
