Centurion’s Perth Airport depot operates two charging sites, named North and South. The North charging site was commissioned back in February and the South charging site is now live from this week, adding a further 10 Mercedes-Benz eActros 300 Battery Electric Trucks to service the Perth metropolitan area. This brings the Hazelmere fleet to 30 electric trucks, all fuelled by onsite green energy supply. South site energy infrastructure includes 2.2MW of rooftop solar, 3.44MWh of battery storage, 75kW and 150kW chargers, and a back-up generator operating on HVO. The project has been developed in partnership with ARENA under the Driving the Nation Program.

Total project specifications include:

• 30 eActros 300 battery electric trucks – 25 rigid trucks and 5 prime movers

• 4.4MW of rooftop solar

• 10.3MWh of battery storage

• 15 dual-port slow and fast chargers

• Fully off-grid charging infrastructure

• Backup generation using HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil)

“The project is now fully operational, and it marks a significant milestone in progressing our decarbonisation journey,” said Justin Cardaci, CEO of Centurion. “Completing this important infrastructure milestone and having the full electric truck fleet operational is a great outcome for Centurion. It shows that with the right partnerships and investment, sustainable freight solutions are achievable today. We’re not only reducing emissions but also providing electric trucks fuelled by green energy that can deliver a high-quality reliable service for our customers.”

The $36 million project was delivered in partnership with Daimler Truck, Cape Dunstans, Switch Batteries and bp Australia, and made possible through $15.8 million in funding from ARENA. This project demonstrates how industry collaboration, renewable energy, and innovation can drive meaningful change in Australia’s transport and logistics sector, reducing emissions while maintaining operational performance.

The next step for the project is to optimise the integration of the green energy and electric truck fleet into Centurion’s wider operations at the Perth Airport depot. This project will generate significant learnings, and Centurion in conjunction with ARENA will be seeking to share this knowledge across the industry.

The project involved 11 oversized loads, 10 moving from Perth and one from Adelaide, using a fleet of 12 trucks. The journey spanned more than 1,300 kilometres, requiring close coordination with multiple authorities, specialised equipment, and experienced personnel to ensure every detail was handled with care.

“A project of this scale required detailed planning and coordination, and the logistics were critical to its success,” said a project manager from Liebherr-Australia. “Centurion supported us through each stage of the process, working closely with our team to ensure safe and timely delivery. Their ability to adapt to changing requirements helped keep everything on track.” The upper carriage alone presented significant logistical challenges. At 185 tonnes, it required a customised transport configuration, line crew support from Western Power to manage overhead clearance, and specialist cranes for loading and offloading. Centurion worked directly with relevant stakeholders to ensure all permits, escorts and clearances were secured in advance, allowing the move to proceed safely and without delay.

Logistics and Safety at the Forefront

Throughout the journey, safety was front and centre. Centurion’s highly experienced drivers conducted regular load checks every five hours, ensuring nothing had shifted and that every component remained secure. The transport spanned three days, and despite the scale and complexity, the operation ran smoothly—thanks to detailed planning, disciplined execution and constant communication.

Another key to success was early collaboration. Centurion supplied Liebherr-Australia with detailed General Arrangement (GA) drawings, including axle weights and equipment specs, which allowed both teams to align early on transport configurations and reduce the risk of issues mid-move.

“Centurion worked closely with our team, with clear communication and well-prepared documentation helping ensure everything stayed on track and aligned during the move.”

A Team Effort of Unmatched Expertise

Behind the scenes, Centurion mobilised 12 drivers and two support staff who worked as a coordinated unit to bring the plan to life. Their collective experience in heavy haulage, paired with a calm and considered approach, helped ensure every milestone was met.

“Jobs like this aren’t just about moving freight,” said Craig Gavin, Centurion’s General Manager of Heavy Haulage West. “It’s about working closely with the customer, understanding the risks, and making sure every piece fits—before wheels even hit the road.”

Throughout most of the year with the constant sunshine in Perth, the solar panels supply the BESS with all the energy required to charge the BEV fleet. The solar arrays have been sized to accommodate majority of weather conditions experienced through the seasons.

To ensure reliability for any particularly bad weather periods during the winter, backup generation is in place. CEA (Construction Equipment Australia) has supplied Atlas Copco generators the project and these operate on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) — a renewable, advanced biofuel derived from waste oils and fats. HVO provides a ~90% reduction in emissions compared to conventional diesel, making it a significantly lower emission alternative.

Our backup generators provide the project with energy security when solar generation to charge the BESS is limited due to prolonged poor weather. It ensures uninterrupted charging capability while keeping emissions to a minimum.

This approach allows us to maintain fully off-grid system powering towards our sustainability objectives.

Under the agreement, Centurion will transport parcels and mailbags between Perth and regional post offices in towns including Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Geraldton, Port Hedland, Broome and Kununurra.
Centurion has been servicing regional Western Australia for more than 50 years, and through its extensive network, along with its established infrastructure and transport capability, it was well aligned with the needs of the contract.

By consolidating mail and parcel deliveries into Centurion’s existing transport runs, the partnership delivers an efficient and consistent service for local communities.

We’ve built our network over five decades to deliver safely, reliably, and regularly to even the most remote parts of the state,” said Centurion CEO Justin Cardaci. “Working with Australia Post is a great fit because it allows us to continue doing what we do best—serving regional communities.”

Under the agreement, Centurion is providing direct deliveries to regional post offices and handling returns to Perth from regional towns.

Since taking on the contract in mid-March 2025, Centurion has shown strong delivery performance, receiving positive feedback from both operational and retail teams.

Centurion is installing charging equipment, integrated energy generation and storage infrastructure in the form of solar array and battery, at their Hazelmere depot in east Perth.

This transformative development, in partnership with Cape Dunstans, a leading provider of material processing, logistics, and infrastructure solutions, marks an important milestone in Australia’s transition towards sustainable logistics and transportation.

The new infrastructure will support Centurion’s fleet of 30 battery electric rigid and prime mover trucks, powered by off-grid energy, as part of a broader vision to reduce its emissions. The fleet will operate with off-grid emissions free energy, cementing Centurion’s leadership in the adoption of clean energy solutions.

The economic stability of this project has been made possible through funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), and their investment to accelerate Australia’s transition to renewable energy and sustainable heavy transport. 

The infrastructure will be built across 2 locations at the depot, with the North site scheduled for completion in December 2024 with electric trucks operating from January 2025. The entire project will reach full operation by mid-2025. 

Once completed, Centurion’s electric fleet will represent a step forward in sustainable transport, reducing carbon emissions while ensuring long-term operational efficiency.

Centurion Chief Executive Officer Justin Cardaci said that the company is actively developing and implementing a decarbonisation strategies aimed at aligning its operations with the broader energy transition.

“We used this huge networking opportunity to get Centurion’s name out there in the region and the industry, as well as share the news of the Mackay depot relocation,” he said.

Over the three-day event, the Centurion team harnessed this opportunity and established a significant presence through our engagement with attendees, educational collateral and branded merchandise making their way through the crowds.

“Our setup, merchandise and valuable connections really helped us make an impression and stand out from crowd of other businesses and attendees,” said Mr George.
