For over 30 years the Queensland Mining & Engineering Exhibition (QME) has been building its presence to become the largest regional mining event in Australia.

Last month, the Centurion team attended QME 2024 at the Mackay Showgrounds, with over 300 industry leading suppliers and thousands of industry participants at the event.

Mackay Branch Operations Manager, Ben George said this was a great opportunity to highlight our tailored service offerings and expertise to a vast potential client-base.

“We used this huge networking opportunity to get Centurion’s name out there in the region and the industry, as well as share the news of the Mackay depot relocation,” he said.

Over the three-day event, the Centurion team harnessed this opportunity and established a significant presence through our engagement with attendees, educational collateral and branded merchandise making their way through the crowds.

“Our setup, merchandise and valuable connections really helped us make an impression and stand out from crowd of other businesses and attendees,” said Mr George.

“An exciting success was the amount of attention the quality Centurion caps received, with everyone from neighbouring business stalls, customers and other transport providers seen wearing them.”

Mr George said from a recruitment standpoint, the QME event was valuable time and resources well spent.

“We received plenty of interest and networked with several potential candidates for upcoming and existing roles,” he said.

The teams on site did an incredible job addressing the questions of potential customers and recruits, representing Centurion with pride.

We would like to thank the teams from Business Development, Recruitment, Marketing and Mackay Operations for their efforts in organising the event and building valuable connections within the Mining and Resources Industry.

We look forward to attending the event in 2026 and continue to network Centurion’s national growth.

Stay up to date with Centurion’s upcoming events to join us next time through Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram.

Celebrating the graduation of 9 new Certificate III graduates in Mackay, Centurion recently announced that the program has successfully guided 45 graduates through the certification since 2021.

Certificate III in Supply Operations is a foundational program that equips participants with a solid understanding of logistics processes, supply chain management, and road transport regulations, preparing them for entry-level roles in the industry and serving as a steppingstone for career advancement.

Certificate III in Transport and Logistics (Driver and Supply Operations) equips graduates with the skills needed to oversee teams and operations effectively. Specifically, it fosters leadership development, empowering graduates with supervisory skills for effective team management and operational optimisation.

The recent graduation celebrated the achievements of Helene Ruhl, Brendan Turnbull, Jenna Wells, Monali Perera, Tiarni Botefuhr, Jamie Bear, Clesia Ape, Reece Williams, and Mark Geekie.

Centurion’s Mackay Branch Operations Manager, Jodie Van Sluys, emphasised the valuable contribution of from the Saltera Training team, who have supported the program over the years.

“Ian’s dedication to working individually with all our students, irrespective of their educational background or learning pace, reflects his profound understanding of our company’s diverse workforce.”

In collaboration with the Saltera team the program commenced in October 2021 and has resulted in the successful commencement of 40 new employees in Mackay, on Certificate III level traineeships.

“The exceptional quality of training provided on-site, tailored to our operations by trainer Ian, alongside the seamless coordination and collaboration from the broader Saltera team, has been exemplary. This success led to the expansion of Saltera’s delivery of traineeships to other Centurion branches in Queensland without hesitation,” said Ms Van Sluys.

Centurion recognises that training is crucial for future-proofing the workforce, particularly through on-site, role-relevant traineeships. Saltera has proven itself as a training organisation that operates with integrity, flexibility, and industry currency.

Graduates from this program complete both the Certificate III in Supply Operations and in Transport and Logistics and gain hands-on experience in critical logistics environments that help to equip them with practical, real-world skills.

The Certificate III in Supply Operations programs ensures regulatory compliance by imparting comprehensive knowledge of road transport regulations, which reduces legal risks for employers. Additionally, it facilitates skill diversification, as graduates acquire a broad range of skills applicable across various roles in the transportation and logistics sector.

Lastly, it enhances industry awareness by exposing participants to industry-specific technologies and practices, fostering adaptability and familiarity with emerging trends.

Similarly, the Certificate III in Transport and Logistics (Driver and Supply Operations) brings numerous advantages. Building upon the foundation of the Certificate II program, this advanced program delves deeper into complex logistics concepts.

The Certification enhances problem-solving abilities, enabling graduates to tackle complex operational challenges, thus ensuring smoother operations. Completion of this program also brings industry recognition and qualifies individuals for more advanced roles, leading to career growth. Graduates are prepared to take on responsibilities related to coordination, supervision, and even leadership roles within the industry.

The achievements of the graduates underscores the commitment of both Centurion and Saltera to future-proofing the workforce through quality training, paving the way for continued growth and success within the transportation and logistics sector.

Fifteen months after successfully expanding into Queensland’s heavy haulage marketplace we’ve entered our second phase of growth in the state with a contract for one of the Bowen Basin’s largest miners.

Centurion was selected by Anglo American as its preferred tenderer for the provision of general transport services for all its operations throughout the Bowen Basin, including its five coal mines in a five year contract.

The contract has generated a significant number of jobs in Queensland, mainly in Mackay, as well as a platform for further growth for the company.

As part of the contract Centurion is operating major freight consolidation facilities in Brisbane, Mackay and Rockhampton along with direct linehaul services to Anglo American sites.

Centurion will run a daily service out of the three consolidation hubs and provide the backbone for the Anglo American supply chain.

Centurion’s Chief Executive Justin Cardaci said the business is well placed to effectively service the contract due to its significant industry experience with similar operations in Western Australia.

“Centurion has a long and extensive history of providing safe and reliable supply chain solutions to customers operating in the mining industry,” Mr Cardaci said.

“Our offering is based on a very well developed mining support solution which has safety at the core and provides visibility tools tailored to client requirements that enable logistics management to be performed in a controlled manner throughout the entire process.

“This not only enables planning and scheduling to be more precise but also allows operators to remove working capital that is in place to buffer supply chain unknowns.”

Mr Cardaci said the development of long-term partnering relationships with clients has enabled Centurion to develop in-house processes and practices that provide real value to its mining, energy and retail customers.

Anglo American operates both underground and open cut mines throughout the Bowen Basin producing high quality coking coal. All of these operations require transport and consolidation and welcomes services for goods and equipment originating from suppliers throughout Australia.

Mr Cardaci said as part of the new contract Centurion had recruited people locally and the company was committed to supporting the regional communities it was operating in.

“We are very pleased to be expanding our offering into the Bowen Basin region as we enter a critical period of growth for our business in Queensland.

“We have surpassed our expectations in terms of performance for our east coast operations in the past 15 months. Our focus is on continuing to build this business by leveraging our core capabilities and safely and reliably servicing the mining, energy, and retail sectors,” he concluded.

Centurion has taken a strategic step to expanding its business nationally by purchasing the entire heavy haulage trailing fleet of McAleese Limited.

The acquisition, for an undisclosed amount, will complement Centurion’s existing heavy haulage business and make it the largest heavy haulage service provider in Australia.

Through the transaction Centurion has also entered into an agreement on premises giving it a foothold in the heavy haulage market across four states – Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia. Centurion’s intent is to be fully operational by January 2017.

Centurion Chief Executive Justin Cardaci said the purchase of the McAleese fleet was strategically sound, aligned with the company’s strength in the resources sector and provided Centurion with a unique opportunity to expand.

“As a well-established and trusted Western Australian company, with more than 45 years’ experience in the transport and logistics arena, including heavy haulage, we have the capability to run a successful national business,” Mr Cardaci said.

“Centurion is a financially strong and stable business that understands the industry. This asset purchase will give us the platform to access new markets and grow our business nationally.”

Mr Cardaci said the company wanted to continue servicing existing and previous McAleese customers under the Centurion banner, targeting industries nationally that depend on the reliable and safe movement of large equipment, including mining, energy, infrastructure and construction.

“McAleese heavy haulage was once a highly successful business in its own right and we believe once we have transitioned these assets to Centurion there is plenty of scope to re-establish this success.

“We have appointed former McAleese part owner Keith Price, who successfully ran the business until it listed, to be in charge of Centurion’s heavy haulage operation.

“This is an exciting opportunity and we look forward to capitalising on our new status as the largest heavy haulage provider in Australia, providing flexible and reliable solutions for all our customers,” Mr Cardaci concluded.

WA’s largest transport and logistics company Centurion has launched a new innovative tyre trailer that improves safety, efficiency and productivity during the transportation of large heavy mobile equipment tyres for the mining industry.

The new trailer design means, for the first time, tyre trailers loaded with some of the largest heavy equipment tyres, can be used in a triple road train configuration reducing the number of drivers, pilots and trailers required for each trip.

Traditionally, the largest dump or haul truck tyres have had to be transported horizontally or lay flat on a flat top trailer. This makes the load oversize and requires it to have an oversize permit and pilot for transportation. It also means that, in the past, these tyres have only been transported in a truck and single trailer configuration.

The new trailer design allows for the tyres to be ‘stood up’ and transported vertically reducing the excessive width and removing the need for the oversize permit and the pilot. As a result, one truck can haul twice as many tyres in a single trip significantly reducing the transport costs per tyre.

The tyre trailer complies with Performance Based Standards (PBS) – a National Heavy Vehicle Regulator scheme that tests the asset against 16 stringent safety standards and four infrastructure standards ensuring it fits the existing road network and is safe.

Each trailer is fitted with electronic stability control to further improve the safety performance.

According to Centurion CEO Justin Cardaci the development of the trailer is a result of the business listening and responding to its customers’ needs as Centurion aims to continually improve its business services offering as well as its safety performance.

“We transported more than 2,600 heavy equipment tyres last year to various mine sites across WA so the development of the new trailer is an important innovation for our business,” Mr Cardaci said.

“The trailer allows us to transport some of the largest heavy mobile equipment tyres as part of a triple road train configuration which significantly improves our efficiency and boosts our productivity in this area.”

Mr Cardaci said the new trailer design would also improve safety – something that Centurion was continually looking to do.

“The automation of tyre loading and unloading and the reduction in manual restraining minimises the risk of injury and makes the whole process of transferring tyres to mine sites safer,” he said.

“The tyres are locked into place remotely which means the operator is always a safe distance from the trailer during a critical part of the loading.”

The tyre trailer, which has been 12 months in design, development and manufacture, provides a more reliable, cheaper and safer solution for transporting tyres to what is currently used in the transport industry.

“The climate at the moment is very much about how and where we can add value and support our clients by finding efficiencies in the supply chain and this trailer is a great example of how we are doing that,” Mr Cardaci said.

A combination of industry specialists were involved in the project to rethink how tyres could be transported and the trailer meets all Department of Transport requirements. The design and manufacture was conducted by a small Western Australian business.

Western Australia’s largest transport and logistics provider Centurion is building on its local business after opening a new $10m Karratha depot at Gap Ridge.

Local Member for the Pilbara, Brendon Grylls, and Executive Chairman of the CFC Group, the parent company of Centurion, Philip Cardaci, officially opened the facility at a breakfast event on 13 November.

The company, which first started delivering to Karratha in 1968, has a long history of servicing both the businesses and people of the City.

The company was founded by brothers Frank and Carl Cardaci in the late 1960’s after they purchased a solitary truck. The first load they delivered was to Karratha the same year.

Nearly 50 years later Centurion has grown from a one truck company into the full logistics solution provider it is today with the City of Karratha remaining central to its future growth plans.

Centurion now provides transport, logistics, supply base and warehousing capabilities in the region.

According to Centurion Executive General Manager Justin Cardaci, the history of the company and Karratha are inextricably linked.

“Karratha has been part of this company from the start. We’ve been involved in every major infrastructure project in the area.

“Over the years we’ve transported critical infrastructure for the City and partnered with companies that construct and then operate the vast projects that underpin the local economy.”

“Whether it be equipment or parts for multi-billion dollar projects, or consumer goods the likely hood is that it will have arrived here via one of Centurions trucks or refrigerated units.”

Mr Cardaci said the new facility would help Centurion service the businesses and people of the city as it grows in the years to come.

“We now have the capability to better service our local customers by improved throughput and turnaround at the Depot.

“Basically as soon as something arrives we can turn it around quicker and get it delivered to its end destination in a shorter time frame.”

Mr Cardaci said that building relationships with local businesses and listening to them no matter how big or small they may be was a key ingredient for the company’s growth.

“We hope we can continue to offer value locally and the opening of this facility demonstrates our continued commitment to the City of Karratha.

Centurion and Ramco, a global leader in pipe care excellence, have formed a strategic partnership aimed at securing a foothold in Western Australia’s multi-million dollar tubular management market.

The partnership brings together Ramco’s technical expertise with Centurion’s supply chain and logistics capability.

As part of the partnership a new semi-automated pipe care unit (PCU3) has been commissioned by Ramco at Centurion’s new Gap Ridge facility in Karratha.

The PCU Type 3 is a state of the art internal and external cleaning and treatment of Oil & gas tubular for the industry.

The plant is considered to be the only automated plant of its type in Australia leading to improved cleaning, significant efficiencies during processing and costs reductions.

The PCU Type 3 will be operated by Ramco while Centurion will look after transport logistics, handling and supply base capability for the pipe.

Centurion Executive General Manager Justin Cardaci said the partnership was a unique opportunity for both companies.

“This is an exciting venture for Centurion because it allows us to combine our business’ core capabilities with Ramco’s technical expertise to produce what we believe is a safer, low cost, more efficient and higher quality way of processing OCTG pipe.

“This is at a time when oil and gas companies are looking to markedly reduce their costs,” Mr Cardaci said.

Ramco CEO Derek Smith said the strategic partnership was a perfect platform for Ramco to enter the Australian market.

“We bring 30 years’ worth of international experience to this partnership as well as state of the art technology, having processed and inspected more than 6 million joints worldwide”.
